Principles into Practice: Methods for Systemic Co-Design 2024


 

📜 Program Description

Are you passionate about co-design and eager to put creative and participatory principles into practice? Through a combination of online training and coaching, you can expand your co-design toolkit and skillset to address complex problems and facilitate inclusive collaboration.

Focusing on the use of co-design to address complex social and public issues, this course explores key principles and methods for co-creating change. Designed and delivered by Dr Emma Blomkamp, this new course guides participants through practical ways to apply the core principles of the Systemic Design Practice Wheel. 

This is a unique opportunity to be guided by an expert, learn from other experienced practitioners, and gain practical skills for successful co-design.

 

Course Overview

Part 1: Seeing systems and setting up for success

  • Understand the purpose-driven nature of co-design. 

  • Determine when co-design is appropriate and most effective.

  • Distinguish between consultation and collaboration.

  • Identify, explore and scope problems and opportunities.

  • Recognise complexity through systems mapping.


Part 2: How to actually learn and create together 

  • Value relationships and roles in co-design teams.

  • Identify, invite and engage participants from priority groups.

  • Embrace adaptive learning and deep listening. 

  • Identify an array of discovery methods.

  • Practise prototyping for learning.


Part 3: Rebalancing power in practice

  • Explore power dynamics and power-sharing techniques.

  • Understand the importance of inclusive facilitation.

  • Elevate the role of lived experience and Indigenous knowledge.

  • Prepare for completion and closure, fostering community ownership.

Program Structure

  • Weekly content over 3 months.

  • Pre-recorded videos and activities each fortnight.

  • 2-hour live Zoom session every other fortnight.

  • 2 x 45-minute individual coaching calls with Emma.

👋 Is this for me?

This course assumes a basic understanding and familiarity with co-design, but no specific experience is required.


✅ It is for you if you:

  • already understand the philosophy of co-design

  • want more tools and techniques to apply in your work

  • work in a public, social or community setting

  • enjoy learning and sharing with peers

  • can commit at least two hours per week over three months

  • can motivate yourself to keep up with content outside of live sessions


❌ It is not for you if you:

  • are quite new to co-design (take our Immersive Introduction first)

  • have a lot of co-design experience already (consider Co-Design Practitioners instead)

  • only work in a commercial/private sector setting

  • expect the course to make you an expert in co-design

  • plan to watch recordings at a later date and not participate in live sessions

Individual registration costs: $1800 AUD inc GST.
Your place is confirmed on receipt of full payment.

  • 6 x 2-hour live sessions

  • Additional resources including exclusive pre-recorded videos for 6 topics

  • Online forum to connect, share, ask and learn with peers and experts

Other payment options include:

  • We can send an invoice free of GST (10%) to participants based outside of Australia; please send us an email to request this!

  • Paying via invoice to deposit into an Australian or New Zealand bank account (NZ-based individuals and organisations can pay the same fees in NZD this way).

  • A 50% scholarship for a First Nations practitioner from Australia or Aotearoa.

  • Discounts for people from lower-income countries.
